Norway entered the United States of America’s Visa Waiver Program in 1991. Since then, Norwegians has been able to travel to the United States without a visa under certain conditions.
The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) was made more effective in 2009 when the U.S. launched its now well-known Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). The system is an online application form where Norwegians and citizens from all other Visa Waiver countries can apply for the ESTA travel authorization online. The ESTA is different from a tourist visa and gives admittance to the U.S. for up to ninety days for the purpose of business, tourism (including medical purposes) and for attending non-credit study programs. It is simpler to obtain as it is obtained via the online application form which means no visit to a U.S. Embassy is required. The ESTA is valid for two years and can be used multiple times.

The ESTA must be acquired at least 72 hours before boarding a U.S.-bound airplane. The 72-hour cut off became mandatory in December 2018. Therefore, applying in good time is advisable. All denied applications must apply for a tourist visa at the nearest U.S. Embassy. Visits to the Embassy means more time is required. So plan wisely. If you already know that you are traveling to the U.S. in the near future, then it is recommended that you apply right away.
