On November 1, 2012, Taiwanese citizens with a valid, machine-readable passport with their National Identification Number were allowed to travel to the United States for business or tourism purposes. Taiwanese citizens must apply for the ESTA to be admitted into the U.S. as part of the Visa Waiver Program. ESTA stands for Electronic System of Travel Authorization.
